DTV Transition - Can YOU Help? (Part 4) - DTV Tuner Integration

By Rodolfo La Maestra • Nov 3, 5:42pm

This part is dedicated to tuner integration and the role it was expected to play in the DTV Transition.

As mentioned in part 3 of this series, 15 million households have over-the-air-only TVs, and many cable/satellite subscribers may also tune broadcast on their secondary TVs.

Would DTV tuner integration address this situation?...

DTV Transition - Can YOU Help? (Part 3) - TVs vs. Households

By Rodolfo La Maestra • Oct 27, 4:58pm

Part 3 of the series has the objective of helping the reader get a general picture of the adoption of digital TVs; the growing of the DTV installed base, household coverage, the combined conditions of both to meet the deadline of the DTV Transition and a projection for the eventual replacement of the full inventory of analog TVs within the US.

Over recent years some of the figures tossed by...

DTV Transition - Can YOU Help? (Part 2) - A Technical View

By Rodolfo La Maestra • Oct 23, 4:18pm

Part 2 is dedicated to some technical aspects and benefits brought by the DTV implementation.

DTV includes HDTV and SDTV, HDTV is a major improvement having 9 times the image quality of analog just in resolution terms, and SD is efficient enough to be able to broadcast 4-6 SD channels over the same bandwidth reserved for one HD channel (or one analog channel) in areas where that line up is needed.

DTV also allows for the simultaneous broadcasting of both HD and SD, whereby SD uses part of the bandwidth required for HD on the same channel slot, which could be a good benefit, but could possibly harm the quality of the parallel HD program if overused. DTV also has...

Slingbox PRO-HD

By The HT Guys • Oct 21, 4:12pm

We reviewed the original Slingbox way back in 2005. Ara currently has two of them and has been able to watch TV from his hotel in Chicago, Denver, and Europe. But the main way the Slingbox is used in the Derderian family is to extend TV reception to any room in the house. While the Slingbox works well via the Internet it works really well on your local network. The issue with Internet usage is bandwidth. First, if your upstream bandwidth is limited, it really doesn't matter how much downstream bandwidth you have. In Ara's home the upstream is capped at 1 Mbps although lately I have exceeded that.

When we saw the Slingbox PRO-HD come to market we were very excited. We realize that...

DTV Transition - Can YOU Help? (Part 1) - Transition, Reception, and Help

By Rodolfo La Maestra • Oct 20, 6:25pm

The purpose of this series of articles is to help the public and the industry with the Digital Television (DTV) transition, and to motivate you to help others.

Due to the imminent DTV transition deadline of February 17, 2009, and because the subject is complicated to many in the public, it deserves to be explained in detail, so I will cover the topic in several articles within the series of "DTV Transition - Can YOU Help?"

If you are interested in a more in-depth analysis of the evolution of the DTV implementation...

Ed's View: Local HD in Indy - Lucky "13"

By Ed Milbourn • Oct 7, 4:48pm

Actually, it's Indianapolis that's lucky to have WTHR, Channel 13, as one of the premier US leaders in providing local HDTV programming. WTHR is at this time the only Indiana station producing HDTV local news and other local programming in this 25th largest market in the US - in which it has been consistently Number 1. This narration is not to be considered a "commercial" for WTHR, (but it would not be judged an affront if so assumed). Rather it is a salute to all those local digital broadcasting pioneers who have had the foresight to fully embraced the technology and adjust their business plans to exploit all the benefits to their customers that can be provided - including, most specifically, locally produced HDTV programming.

It is no secret that the old over-the-air (OTA) TV broadcast business model is in trouble at both the major network and local levels...

Blu-ray Review: Patton

By The HT Guys • Oct 7, 2:40am

The movie won seven Oscars when it was released in 1970 and is one of Ara's favorites. He has seen it at least ten times over the years and it has a permanent place on his movie server. So with the recent release on Blu-ray, We wanted to see if the movie benefited from the new technology.
